Examination PE

Students at The Senior School are able to study PE for GCSE and A level examinations. This course is both theoretical and practical.

The IGCSE Physical Education syllabus at the Senior School aims to provide students with an opportunity to study both the theoretical and the practical aspects of physical education. Students are assessed on their performances in a range of different practical activities and sports. They also develop their skills in the applied practical sciences, physiology and psychology and explain some of the social and cultural aspects of Physical Education and Sport. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for learners to become physically confident in a way, which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

What will I learn?

The course is designed to 

  • Develop your knowledge and practical skills in a range of physical activities  

  • Examine the effects of exercise and how training can improve performance  

  • Identify ways to develop and maintain a healthy and active lifestyle through participation in physical activity  

  • Explore the influence of media, sponsorship, global events have upon leisure and recreational time.  

  • Understand why been healthy and active is important in all sports.  

VERY IMPORTANT: You MUST be able to participate in 4 different sports at a high level  

Curriculum Content

There is one written paper of 1 hour and 45 minutes that is worth 50% of the qualification and a coursework component , also worth 50%.

What sort of homework will I be set?

As the course consists of practical and theory work students will be set both areas. Students will have the opportunity to research, present their finding via Office 365 Apps.

Studying A Level Physical Education will give you a fantastic insight into the amazing world of sports performance. Not only will you have the chance to perform or coach a sport through the non-exam assessment component, but you will also develop a wide-ranging knowledge of the how and why of Physical activity and sport. The combination of physical performance and academic challenge provides an exciting opportunity for students. You can perform, and then through the academic study improve your performance or coaching though application of the theory.   

Curriculum Content

The course is designed to 

  • Develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that under pin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance   

  • Understand how physiological and psychological states affect performance   

  • Understand the key socio-cultural factors that influence people’s involvement in physical activity and sport   

  • Understand the role of technology in physical activity and sport   

  • Refine their ability to perform effectively in physical activity and sport by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas   

  • Develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance   

  • Understand the contribution which physical activity makes to health and fitness   

  • Improve as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with curious and enquiring minds.   

 

How is the course assessed?  

There are four components to the qualification, two written papers of 2 hours 30 minutes, which are together worth 70%, and two practical, internally assessed coursework components, each worth 15% of the A level. 

What are the GCSE requirements for this course?

To study examination PE in the Sixth form you should be playing at a high level in at least four sports.

You should also have a grade 6 or above in GCSE PE.
